Late-night lorry fire on M77 sparks closure of motorway in both directions

A lorry fire in the early hours of this morning has forced the closure of the M77 motorway south of Glasgow. The incident was reported by Traffic Scotland to have occurred between J5 A726 (Eaglesham / Newton Mearns) and J6 A77 (Kingswell) around 2am this morning. The motorway has since reopened northbound after it was shut in both directions since early this morning.

However, the M77 Southbound remains closed due to recovery work – which has been ongoing since 7:30am. Sign up to Glasgow Live newsletters for more headlines straight to your inbox Traffic information site INRIX report that the road did reopen a few times during the night however, it had to be shut again as the lorry fire was not fully contained.

A diversion is currently in place via the A77. A Scottish Fire & Rescue Service spokeswoman said: “We received a call at 12.48am to reports of a HGV trailer well alight on the M77 between Junctions 5 and 6 southbound. Two appliances attended alongside police.

There were no casualties.

Fire crews left at 7:55am this morning”.

Police Scotland have also been contacted for comment.
