Pictures show wreckage of lorry after M4 fire

Pictures have emerged showing the wreckage of the lorry that caught fire on the M4 this afternoon (July 16). The fire that was first reported around 2.30pm this afternoon is located near Swindon, between junctions 15 and 14 on the eastbound M4. Queues of trafficquickly developed around the scene as both carriageways were initially closed while fire crews dealt with the blaze.

IN OUR LIVE BLOG: Lorry fire sees traffic stopped and massive queues near Swindon Closures were put in place due to “the nature of the fire and the contents of the lorry”, according to Highways England, which it further said made the closures necessary for safety reasons.

The lorry fire has kept the M4 closed since shortly after 2.30pm

Highways England has since confirmed that traffic has now been released on both sides of the carriageway but that heavy delays remain in the area as trapped traffic moves away. Gloucestershire Police has confirmed that there were no reported injuries in relation to the lorry fire on the M4.

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue has confirmed it was on the scene and tweeted images of the wrecked lorry, which has had its carriage completely gutted by the blaze. The fire service tweeted earlier today: “Traffic is now being released westbound on the M4 between J15 and J14, but crews continue to damp down the lorry on the eastbound carriageway.” A Highways England South West tweet also earlier confirmed that the work on the scene was to minimise “a risk of further explosions”.

The tweet said: “Due to the contents of the LGV fire are still working at scene to make sure there is not a risk of further explosions.” The latest INRIX update has confirmed the reopening of all lanes around the scene as of 5.15pm, but has warned that diversions through surrounding areas including Marlborough and Hungerford are becoming very busy.
