M1 closed after pedestrian killed in fatal crash

The M1 is closed southbound at junction 16 after a pedestrian was hit and killed on the carriageway. The road was shut at 5.20am on Wednesday morning from the junction for the A4500, with the southbound carriageway closed to junction 15A for the A43 and Northampton services. Officers later confirmed a pedestrian had died after being hit by a vehicle on the road in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Traffic update service Inrix reported the incident involved a lorry, with National Highways confirming that police and ambulance crews were in attendance. National Highways posted on Twitter: “The #M1 southbound #J16 (#A4500 #Northampton) to #J15A / Northampton Services (#A43 #Northampton) is in the process of being CLOSED due to a serious collision. “Traffic Officers @NorthantsPolice @EMASNHSTrust & Maintenance Crews are on their way to the area.”

The closure has caused tailbacks, with a traffic cameras showing vehicles queueing.
