Young woman taken to hospital after fire engulfs lorry trailer full of tyres

A young woman has been taken to hospital after a fire engulfed a lorry trailer full of tyres. The blaze broke out on a site off Bickershaw Lane, Wigan, at about 10.15am today (Tuesday, August 24). Plumes of black smoke could be spotted for miles around and eyewitnesses reported hearing a series of ‘loud bangs’.

“There were several more quieter explosions which sounded like gas bottles bursting. “I rang the fire brigade.”

The North West Ambulance Service confirmed it had taken a woman in her 20s to hospital with ‘minor injuries’. The blaze involved a lorry trailer full of tyres, Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said.

People living nearby were urged to keep their doors and windows closed while the fire was brought under control. A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: “At approximately 10.15am on Tuesday, August 24, five fire engines from Wigan, Atherton, Leigh and Farnworth and a control unit from Rochdale were called to a fire on Bickershaw Lane, in Bickershaw, Wigan. “The fire involves an HGV trailer containing tyres.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus are using jets to extinguish the fire.

“The incident has since been scaled down to two pumps and crews remain at the scene dampening down remaining hotspots.

“The incident is causing a lot of smoke and people living locally in the area are please asked to keep their doors and windows shut until the smoke clears.”
