LIVE: M6 delays ‘severe’ after ‘crane’ strikes bridge and fuel spillage

There are ‘severe’ delays of up to 60 minutes on the M6 following two incidents. Two lanes are closed between on the M6 Southbound between Junction 23 and Junction 22 following a bridge strike at around 6.25am this morning which was resulted in debris on the road and surface damage. Another related incident has occurred within J22 which has resulted in two lanes being closed after a vehicle struck debris from the bridge strike.

This has resulted in the vehicle having a ruptured fuel tank leading to a spillage in the road. Officers from multiple agencies are in attendance, including: National Highways, North West Motorway Police and maintenance contractors. Road users bound for Manchester and the M60 or M62 are urged to exit at J30 or J29 and take the M61 south to bypass the delays.

North West Motorway Police are advising motorists travelling in the area to allow for extra time whilst the incident is dealt with.
