Live updates as lanes closed after crane crashes into bridge on M6

We’ll be bringing you the latest updates as a crash has brought traffic to a standstill in one direction on the M6 motorway this morning. The M6 southbound is blocked due to a crash between junction 23 East Lancashire Road (Haydock) and junction 22 Winwick Lind Road (Newton Le Willows). The accident took place across the two outside lanes and is currently causing queues of traffic on the approach.

According to traffic monitoring Inrix, the crash involved a mobile crane that struck a bridge just before J22. Traffic officers and Manchester Fire Service are at the scene. National Highways North West tweeted: “The M6 southbound RobLaneWorksUnit to J22 (Warrington North A49) traffic has been temporarily STOPPED due to a collision.

“Traffic Officers and Manchester Fire are currently at the scene.

Congestion building on the approach.”
