Screwfix creating 600 new jobs in Staffordshire

Up to 600 new jobs are being created across Staffordshire’s two Screwfix distribution centres near Stafford and Lichfield. The trade tools, accessories and hardware products retailer are looking for hundreds of new, full-time employees across its sites at Prologis Park in Stafford and at Fradley Park. Screwfix saw online sales increase by 146 per cent during the DIY and home improvement boom in lockdown – and as warehouse volumes hit record levels, the need for more staffing has provided a great opportunity to hundreds of workers across the county.

top stories from across the Staffordshire area Screwfix’s logistics partner Wincanton is leading the recruitment drive, with Rachel Gilbey, managing director of general merchandise at Wincanton, saying: “Many have faced uncertain times over the past few months, but our customer Screwfix has enjoyed a period of continued growth. “We’re pleased to be recruiting so many people from the local area to support their store expansion and I’m looking forward to welcoming our new colleagues to the team.”

She added: “We have a variety of shifts and positions available to suit all people – from experienced logistic professionals to those who are new to the storage and distribution sector.” Over the last 12 months, Screwfix has expanded its store network with the opening of more than 50 new sites across the UK and the Republic of Ireland. New colleagues will be based across various shift patterns and all areas of the warehouse and transport operation including driving, picking, goods inwards and forklift truck.

Elsewhere, Stoke-on-Trent haulage firm Browns Distribution is holding a recruitment open day at the weekend to fill a handful of new vacancies. The company wants to increase its 105-strong workforce after seeing demand for its service ‘sky rocket’ over the past few years. The open day is taking place at the firm’s Ladywell Road headquarters, in Tunstall, on Saturday, September 11.

The recruitment drive follows a recent GBP1.8 million investment into new trucks and trailers at the company. Managing director David Brown Jr said: “Browns Distribution has quickly become the top choice for pallet deliveries in and around Stoke-on-Trent, and with one of the industry’s busiest seasons lurking just around the corner, we are looking to bring new talent on board to join our existing driving team. “As a close-knit, family-run business of more than 65 years, we truly do appreciate all of our workers – and certainly couldn’t do what we do best without our team of incredible drivers.

“So we are giving locals the opportunity to progress in a rewarding career. “All new additions will reap the benefits of our recently-introduced driving team perks, including a GBP1,500 signing bonus, regular pay reviews, enhanced night out allowance for class 1 drivers, a new ‘We Pay Scheme’ covering driver medicals, eye tests and license admin fees, plus a truckload of other benefits.”
