Huge lorry full of potato waffles explodes into fireball on UK motorway

A lorry carrying a load of potato waffles caused traffic chaos when it burst into flames on a motorway. The dramatic blaze broke out on the hard shoulder of the M6 in Cheshire at around 7.10am this morning. Fire crews rushed to the scene on the northbound carriageway between junctions 20 and 21 and worked for more than two hours to extinguish the flames.

The inferno caused misery for hundreds of motorists who faced lengthy traffic delays between Lymm and Woolston. Cheshire Police confirmed that the driver was not injured and remained at the scene to assist officers and fire investigators.

Shocking photos released by the fire service show the charred remains of packets of Birdseye potato waffles loaded on the back of the HGV. A Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “Firefighters are dealing with a HGV on fire on the M6 northbound, Thelwall viaduct between junctions 20 and 21.

“Crews wearing breathing apparatus are tackling the fire using three hose reels.” They later added: “Firefighters are continuing to shuttle water to the scene and are now tackling the fire using two hose reels.

“A recovery vehicle is currently at the scene waiting to remove the vehicle. “Plans are being put in place to remove the contents of the lorry.”

A Highways England spokesperson said: “There are severe delays of at least 90 minutes above usual journey times approaching the scene of a lorry which has caught fire at J21. “Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service are on scene and lead the response to this incident. “Lanes 1 and 2 (of 4) have been closed.

The fire has been extinguished and the recovery vehicle is in place to start removing the contents of the lorry. “Highways England have resources at the scene assisting with traffic management and carrying out assessments regarding the necessary repair and clear up works which will be required following the vehicles successful recovery. “The current lane closures are expected to remain in place throughout the day.”

The M6 northbound was fully shut for around an hour before reopening at 8.30am while junction 21 remains closed as well as two lanes of the main carriageway.
