Families brave cold to welcome Coca-Cola Christmas Truck to Gateshead
Christmas arrived in Gateshead on Friday in the form of the Coca-Cola Christmas Truck which delivered a whole load of festive cheer. The announcement that the annual truck tour was back, following its cancellation last year due to the pandemic, had generated huge excitement and was followed just this week with news of its visit to the Metrocentre. And when it rolled into town ahead of the weekend, there were crowds of families ready to welcome it.
On the day that Storm Arwen was due to take hold, visitors braved the cold and lined up for their chance to see the famous red truck up close.

For many, the annual tour marks the start of Christmas and after its arrival at Metrocentre at 11am, they had a chance to take selfies and pick up a free mini can of Coca-Cola Zero. However due to the increasingly stormy weather, the giveaways ended early and the truck was available for photos only between 5-8pm. Among those having their pictures taken was 17-month-old Ayla Spencer from Tow Law in County Durham.
More children were expected after-school with the evening offering the chance to see the 6.5 metre-long, 13-tonne truck’s illuminations at their best. The tour stop-offs are always accompanied by Christmas music – including the truck’s famous ‘the holidays are coming’ jingle – plus plenty of seasonal cheer and a scattering of fake snow.

The company is releasing tour dates in stages and so far only its next two locations have been announced: Leeds this weekend followed by Yorkshire on December 1. The Coca-Cola truck first appeared in Coca-Cola’s Holidays Are Coming advert 26 years ago and the current tour has a theme of local community and togetherness, forming part of the company’s Real Magic campaign.
Louise Maugest, marketing director at Coca-Cola Great Britain, has said: “With the magic of Christmas needed now more than ever, we thought it was only right that we bring it back this year, safely and securely.
“The Coca-Cola Truck Tour has always been a moment to remind us of the importance of togetherness and community, something particularly prevalent during the festive season.”
