There are miles of tailbacks on the M65 this evening after a lorry crashed into the central reservation. It is believed a lorry being driven on the westbound carriageway crashed into the central reservation and ended up on the eastbound carriageway, which has affected traffic both ways between junction four A666 Earcroft Way (Darwen/Blackburn South) and junction five A6077 (Guide/Shadsworth). The incident happened at junction four for Blackburn with Darwen services just before 4pm, with Highways closing one lane in both directions, including on the eastbound entry slip road at junction four.

A spokesperson for Blackburn with Darwen roads department said: “The local road network is very busy this evening due to an incident on the M65 at junction four resulting in the entry slip road being closed. “Traffic is therefore using the local road network to access junction five via Blackamoor Road, which has existing roadworks on it. “I have taken an alternative route home, please bear this in mind on your evening commute.”

A passenger in a car on his way home to Haslingden from Blackburn said: “Traffic is backed up along the Grane Road going towards Blackburn, I’d say for at least a mile and a half. It looks horrendous.” A spokesperson for National Highways said: “Collision M65 J4/Blackburn with Darwen Services (BlackburnSouth/Bolton/Darwen/A666).

“One lane has been closed in both directions including the eastbound entry slip road at J4 due to a serious collision.” An update just after 5pm read: “We are just in the process of re-opening the eastbound entry slip road at J4 however one lane will remain closed in both directions due to extensive barrier damage.”
