Arson investigation as van torched on Hanley street

Police have launched an arson investigation after a van was torched on a city centre street. Firefighters were called out to Century Street in Hanley at 11.35pm last night following reports of a blaze. And following the incident a 32-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of arson.

Today Staffordshire Police are appealing for witnesses following the late-night blaze. Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service say a crew from Hanley was sent to the scene at 11.35pm last night (May 29). A spokesman said: “On arrival, the crew found a white Nissan Primastar van well-alight.

The fire was extinguished using one breathing apparatus and one hose reel jet. The fire was later deemed as a result of a deliberate ignition.” Residents say police remained at the scene for several hours while a recovery truck was later spotted in the neighbourhood.

A spokesman for Staffordshire Police said: “The fire was later deemed to be deliberate by the fire service. A 32-year-old man, of no-fixed-address, was arrested a short time later on suspicion of arson. He remains in police custody while inquiries continue.”
