Man killed in lorry horror smash named by police

A man who died after being hit by a lorry on a busy Darlington road has been named by police. Ian Raper, of Shildon, was tragically pronounced dead at the scene following the horror crash on Woodland Road last month. The lorry driver, a 47-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of death by dangerous driving and has since been released under investigation.

The family of Mr Raper, 49, have asked for their privacy as they come to terms with their loss. Police have previously called for any witnesses to come forward. A spokeswoman for Durham Constabulary said: “We can now confirm the identify of a man who tragically died following a collision on Woodland Road in Darlington on Friday, April 29.

The incident, which involved a lorry and a pedestrian, happened shortly before 10.10am, near the junction with Hollyhurst Road. “Ian Raper, 49, from Shildon was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. His family have asked for privacy as they come to terms with their loss.
