Explosion as two lorries and a car crash

Explosions were heard by neighbours and plumes of black smoke filled the sky after a crash between two lorries and a car. The accident happened on the A5 at Tamworth this morning, Wednesday, June 8. One of the trucks caught fire as a result of the crash.

Everyone managed to get out of the vehicles prior to the arrival of the emergency services, with only minor injuries reported. The road remains closed in both directions between the A51 and B5440 and emergency services, along with the air ambulance were reported that the scene. A spokesman for Staffordshire Police said: “Police were called at 10.57am on Wednesday 8 June to the A5 Ventura Retail Park roundabout in Tamworth, near the B5440 junction, following reports of a three-vehicle collision.

Upon arrival, officers found a car and two trucks in collision with one of the trucks on fire.

All drivers and passengers were out of the vehicles prior to emergency services’ arrival. “Only minor injuries have been reported and medics have confirmed no one needs to attend hospital. Officers assisted in the closure of the road and informed Highways.

The closure currently remains in place in both directions. Drivers are urged to take alternative routes where possible. We thank you for your patience and understanding at this time.”

A spokesman for Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “Firefighters were called at 10.59am on Wednesday 8 June to the A5, close to the exit for Ventura Retail Park, following reports of two lorries in collision and on fire. Crews from Tamworth and Mercia attended, followed by Lichfield. “Upon arrival, three adults and one child were assessed by paramedics at the scene, with one individual having sustained minor injuries.

Crews made the area safe and left the scene at 12.47pm. The incident remains in the care of Staffordshire Police.” A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “We were called to reports of a collision between a lorry and a car on the westbound carriage of the A5 near Ventura Retail Park in Tamworth at 10.59am.

“One ambulance and a paramedic officer are currently in attendance at the scene and we are treating two patients, one from each vehicle.” Those who were nearby spoke to StaffordshireLive’s sister site, BirminghamLive, about what they heard and saw. Ashleigh Salter said: “I was sitting having my hair done and there were massive bangs and black smoke!

No idea what happened but there is a huge fire. Heard sirens, too.” Debbie Murphy, said she heard “about 4 huge bangs” in Kettlebrook and” saw black smoke.

On social media, someone said: “Huge lorry fire and explosions on the A5 Tamworth bypass. Road closed in both directions. Be careful if you are travelling that way.”
