Grassy amphitheatre perfect for picnic to open near Oxfordshire
A summer of music, theatre and comedy is coming to a first-of-its-kind grassy amphitheatre which has space for 500 people – and it is just a short trip from Chipping Norton. Berrybank Park Amphitheatre opens to the public on Tuesday (June 14) with the landmark return of Julius Caesar performed by the world-famous Shakespeare’s Globe theatre tour. But it won’t just be plays written by William Shakespeare that you can experience in this unique space: comedy, jazz, opera, cabaret and even a festival of ecology and music will be played in front of the tiered seating, with enough space to lay a picnic rug.
The events at the amphitheatre will run until September 4. There is also a sumptuous marquee, that glows like a lantern-lit canvas Brighton Pavilion, that not only offers a space where people can buy drinks and a range of seasonal nibbles, but also provides an alternative performance space if the weather turns bad. The amphitheatre was created in memory of Janet Cockell whose love of performing arts and the Cotswolds inspired her family to build the venue to celebrate performance in all its magic.
It offers a space for internationally renowned performers, local groups, schools, and performers to share their talent with the rural areas which are so often bereft of places to enjoy cultural events like these without travelling.
After a summer of a diverse programme of events with something for everyone, the amphitheatre’s first season will close with a rousing charity “picnic in the park” proms with the Jaguar Land Rover Band and a firework display.
