Live: A5 partially re-opened after smash ‘explosion’

The A5 has been shut in both directions following a smash. Loud ‘explosions’ could be heard and thick smoke seen across the town after a collision in Tamworth. The incident happened on the A5 on Wednesday morning, June 8, before 11am.

Emergency services were at the scene and the air ambulance landed. The air ambulance was later stood down. Highways England said the A5 is closed in both directions between the A51 and B5440.

Tamworth Police say: “The A5 in the Ventura Retail Park, Bonehill area of Tamworth is closed in both directions while the emergency services attend an incident. Drivers should take alternative routes if possible. We thank you for your patience and understanding at this time.”

Ashleigh Salter said: “I was sitting having my hair done and there were massive bangs and black smoke! No idea what happened but there is a huge fire. Heard sirens, too.”
