Police and fire statement after car and two trucks collide

Firefighters have made the scene safe after a car and two trucks collided this morning. The incident happened on the A5 near to Ventura Park, Tamworth. Residents reported hearing loud explosions and could see smoke across the town.

A closure in both directions was implemented but the A5 northbound is now open between the A51 and B5440. The southbound remains closed for recovery and clean up and Highways England are advising to allow extra time if travelling in the area. Staffordshire Police say: “We were called at 10.57am on Wednesday 8 June to the A5 Ventura Retail Park roundabout in Tamworth, near the B5440 junction, following reports of a three-vehicle collision.

All drivers and passengers were out of the vehicles prior to emergency services’ arrival. Only minor injuries have been reported and medics have confirmed no one needs to attend hospital. “Officers assisted in the closure of the road and informed Highways.

The closure currently remains in place in both directions. Drivers are urged to take alternative routes where possible. We thank you for your patience and understanding at this time.”

Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service added: “Firefighters were called at 10.59am on Wednesday 8 June to the A5 ,close to the exit for Ventura Retail Park, following reports of two lorries in collision and on fire. Crews from Tamworth and Mercia attended, followed by Lichfield. “Upon arrival, three adults and one child were assessed by paramedics at the scene, with one individual having sustained minor injuries.

“Crews made the area safe and left the scene at 12.47pm. The incident remains in the care of Staffordshire Police.” West Midlands Ambulance Service said: “We were called to reports of a collision between a lorry and a car on the westbound carriage of the A5 near Ventura Retail Park in Tamworth at 10.59am.

One ambulance and a paramedic officer attended. “Upon arrival we found three patients. A man who was the driver of the lorry and two boys who were passengers in the car.

All three were assessed and had sustained injuries not believed to be serious.

They received self care advice and were discharged at the scene.”
