Recap after A5 is closed after lorry hits bridge

‘Recovery of the vehicle is likely to be protracted’

The latest update from the highways people suggests it’s going to be a long clean-up operation. National Highways stated in an email sent out just now (8.38am): “National Highways is advising drivers that the A5 is closed in both directions between the A47 near Nuneaton and the M69 near Hinckley after a bridge strike. At 2.45am this morning a lorry hit the structure and overturned, which has caused a large diesel spillage.

“Recovery of the vehicle is likely to be protracted, as is the clean-up operation. Road users are advised that delays are likely on the approach to the closure, with longer journey times also anticipated on the diversion routes.” It adds that diversion details are as follows:

Northbound – follow the solid square symbol from the M69 J1, via the B4109, B4114 and A4254 to the A47.

Then take the A47 to the A5 Longshoot junction, to re-join the A5 northbound.

Southbound – follow the solid diamond symbol, from Dodwell’s Island – onto the B4666 and local roads, including the B590, B4669 and B4109, to re-join the A5 at Baskerville Interchange.
