Owner speaks out as popular pub closes down due to cost of living crisis

The Antelope in High Wycombe has announced it will close down this month. The pub announced the closure on social media saying the cost of living crisis and rent prices have "become too much". Located in Church Square, The Antelope has been run by Mark Adkins for seven years becoming a popular venue for drinkers.

Under his management, the pub has installed a large screen for sports events, taken up a 6am license to open late and ran an all-vegan fast food truck in their beer garden. The Bite Down fast-food truck is set to stay open but only for delivery and collection. Drinks at The Antelope are now 20 per cent off with the pub closing "whenever the drink runs out".

Mark Adkins told the Bucks Free Press: "The Antelope pushed for and got a 6am licence, when at a time that the latest issues was 4am. "We were the first to introduce an ID scanner so that barred customers were unable to enter, we had the huge outdoor screen and we were a vegan pub but many customers were not even aware. "And due to our live music stage we attracted more customers to the town, even having more watching our stage than the main stage at Frogfest for the last two years that we had it."

The pub's social media post said: "Some of you may have already heard that we will be closing The Antelope, so all of our drinks are now 20% off until that day comes!  "We're very sad about closing, but with the failure of the pub company to decrease the rent, and the effects of the cost of living crisis, it has just become too much for us now. "It's been an incredible 7 years under Mark's management, and we feel very accomplished in all of the things we have done in that time.

"A few of them being the huge outdoor screen for the sports events, our beloved outdoor stage (that unfortunately had to close much earlier than we would have liked), and leading the way with late licenses in the town with our 6am license.

"Thank you to all of our loyal customers, and those who have just passed through, you made the last 7 years the best!

"The closing date will be in September, whenever the drink runs out."
