Emergency services at Team Valley roundabout after lorry overturns near A1

A lorry has overturned on a Team Valley[1] roundabout during rush hour.

Police and firefighters were called to the scene on the Lamesley Roundabout in Gateshead[2] at around 5.45pm on Thursday.

The white Mercedes-Benz lorry had fallen onto its side as it negotiated the roundabout underneath the A1.

It is not believed that anyone was hurt and firefighters said no one was rescued from inside the lorry’s cab.

Firefighters could be seen examining the lorry, which landed across a path and grass verge.

The windscreen had smashed on one side and a small diesel spill leaked out onto the road.

One lane of the roundabout has been closed while firefighters from Newcastle[3] and Swalwell stations work to clear the diesel spill from the road.

Northumbria Police said[4] officers were on the scene and were waiting for a recovery vehicle to clear the lorry.

Earlier on Thursday afternoon, four vehicles were involved in a crash on the A1 north near the Angel of the North.

Police closed one lane at around 5pm with traffic tailing back to Birtley.

The road was cleared and re-opened at around 5.40pm.
